Mercedes-Benz Air Intake Systems FAQ

What Do Air Intakes Do?

Also called air induction systems, they're responsible for delivering the steady supply of oxygen that the engines in Mercedes-Benz vehicles need for combustion.

How Does an Air Intake Work?

It's simple. First, an intake manifold pulls outside air through an air filter, which captures dust, dirt, and other airborne contaminants. Next, three components -- a mass airflow (MAF) sensor, an air metering system, and an oxygen (O2) sensor (or sensors) -- work together to determine the proper amount of air needed for ideal combustion; the MAF sensor measures the air's movement, the metering system feeds info on the amount of air being used back to an engine control unit, or ECU, and the O2 sensor monitors the exhaust levels, so that the engine can adjust both fuel and air levels to optimize the mix.

What are the Signs the Air Intake System in My Mercedes-Benz is Faulty?

The engine may idle faster or slower than usual or rev higher than normally, and it might underperform. Also, the Check Engine light may show up on the dashboard. In any case, you should run an engine inspection to figure out what's going on. If you're not sure, or you need help with repairs, you're welcome to contact a Mercedes-benz dealer to schedule a service appointment.
