Mercedes-Benz E 500 FAQ
The Mercedes-Benz E 500 is a luxury sedan in the greater Mercedes-Benz E-Class line of cars. It was available initially in the early 1990s, and then once again from 2003 to 2006.
Early on, in 1994, for instance, the car offered seating for as many as four, and it incorporated a 315-horsepower, 5.0-liter V8 engine. In the model's later years, it featured a 302-horsepower engine and an air suspension, and a 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission came standard in base models, while a five-speed auto was built into models with 4MATIC®, the proprietary Mercedes-Benz all-wheel-drive (AWD) system.
What are Some Common Problems with Mercedes-Benz E 500?Defective Cylinder Heads
Defective Cylinder Heads
E 500 models from 2006 have a known issue where motor oil leaks from expansion plugs on the camshaft access ports on the cylinder head. You'll know it from a puddle of oil below your vehicle. Notice one, and the plugs will need to be replaced. Inspect and replace them every 60,000 miles afterward.
Failed Struts
If you hear knocking noise coming from the front end of your E 500, there's a good chance that it's because the bushings on the strut tower have cracked. This is a known issue for models from 1994 and 2005. The bushings will need replacement.
Faulty Suspensions
If the tires on your E 500 are unusually and irregularly worn, and the car's suspension seems to be leaking oil, then most likely, its front thrust link bushings have cracked and not only begun leaking their fluid but also and causing "play" in the suspension. This is a known issue for models from 2005 and 2006, with 154,000 miles or fewer these days. You'll need to replace the bushings.
A Mercedes-Benz service center can help with repairs. Be sure to use OEM parts for them.
Why Buy OEM Parts for Mercedes-Benz E 500 vs. Aftermarket?
Because they're Mercedes-Benz quality, they're not only designed to fit your E 500 but also to work right the first time. Moreover, they won't void any factory warranty your car has left; some aftermarket parts, however, can. Most even carry manufacturer warranties of their own, too, for peace of mind.
