Mercedes-Benz Ball Joints
All About Mercedes-Benz Ball Joints
Ball joints are critical parts of the front suspension in your Mercedes-Benz vehicle. What they are, basically, are connectors that allow the suspension to move both vertically and horizontally, providing you with full control of the luxury car or SUV you love.
What Ball Joints Do
Just like your hip joint features a ball that fits into a socket to enable pivoting motion, a ball joint connects the steering knuckles and the control arms. That ensures complete command of your wheels, and a smooth ride.
Ball joints are made of a metal housing and a stud that moves with the housing. Interior bearings reduce friction, and the socket is filled with grease to lubricate the moving parts. Finally, there's a rubber boot that keeps debris out and the grease contained.
The Types of Ball Joints
There are two. An upper ball joint keeps parts aligned and allows the steering knuckle to rotate as needed. A lower ball joint functions as a pivot point for your steering system. Since the latter can be load-bearing, they tend to wear out faster than upper ball joints do.
Signs the Ball Joints in Your Mercedes-Benz are Faulty
Because ball joints take a lot of abuse, it's not unusual for them to show signs of wear and tear. Look (and listen, and feel) for:
- A clunking or rattling sound from under your vehicle
- Excessive vibrations
- Your vehicle continually pulling to one side or the other
- Uneven tire tread wear
In any case, run an inspection to figure out what's going on, and, if preferred, have suspension service done at a Mercedes-benz dealer.
