Mercedes-Benz Alternators
All About Alternators for Mercedes-Benz
What Alternators are and What They Do
Critical parts of the charging systems in Mercedes-Benz vehicles. They turn mechanical energy, or motion, into electrical energy -- in other words, into electricity. In short, they generate current.
How an Alternator Works
It's straightforward. First, the engine runs the serpentine belt and drive belts; they move a pulley, which turns a rotor shaft, which spins some magnetic coils. The movement of the coils produces a magnetic field whose energy a rectifier captures as AC power and turns into DC power. A voltage regulator manages the power.
As a result, the alternator can charge the vehicle's battery and help run its many other electrical systems, including the dashboard lights and displays, the car radio, power windows and power steering, windshield wipers, and even options like heated seats.
Unfortunately, any alternator can fail. Causes of this include worn or damaged parts, improper accessory installs, and jump-starting the wrong way. Even an overtightened alternator belt can be the issue. Otherwise, there are symptoms that'll tell you that yours may be going bad.
The Signs of Problems with an Alternator
Look for dashboard alternator and battery warning lights, car lighting malfunctions, car radio issues, a dead battery, and general electrical system failure. Smell for a burning odor under the hood, and keep an eye out for leaking alternator fluid. Also, listen for engine squeals.
In any case, and you should inspect and test your vehicle's charging system. If the results call for alternator replacement, get the job done ASAP. Otherwise, change your alternator either every 7 years or every 80,000 to 150,000 miles. Check your owner's manual for more details.
Before you buy a new one, though -- or even replacement parts -- be sure they're genuine.
Why Buy Genuine OEM vs. Aftermarket?
Your brand designs them to work with its car and SUV models from the start, guaranteed. (That's something that the aftermarket for alternators can't always promise.) Whether you drive a Mercedes-Benz E 320 or C 230 sedan, a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van, or otherwise, you shouldn't trust anything less.
