Mercedes-Benz Vacuum Pumps

What does the vacuum pump in my Mercedes-Benz do?

It helps mitigate the positive boost pressure in your vehicle's turbocharged or supercharged engine. Put simply, it helps that engine pull in the right amount of air to match the fuel draw needed to get more power. It can also mitigate pressures for other parts and in other systems, too -- the brake booster, for instance, or the solenoid in the emissions system, or even the wastegate actuator in the turbo.

Your Mercedes-Benz has one of two kinds, usually. One's the mechanical kind: the engine drives it directly, sometimes off the back of a camshaft; motor oil lubricates it, and the spinning rotor in its housing creates its vacuum. The other's the electrical kind; it uses an electric charge to do the same thing, and it's generally cheaper to replace than a mechanical pump.

What are the signs that my Mercedes-Benz vacuum pump is bad?

You may hear hissing noises, indicating a vacuum leak, usually from damaged hoses. Your vehicle may have trouble braking, it may fail an emissions test, oil may start leaking from the side of its engine, and the AC system may stop working right. If the pump's mechanical, it may seize (indicating a lack of oil), you may find its seals worn, and you may notice that oil has gotten into the vacuum system.

Run into any such symptoms, and you should swap out the pump for an OEM replacement; a Mercedes-Benz service center can help. Otherwise, if the pump fails, it can damage the camshaft and timing components, leading to catastrophic engine failure and expensive repairs.

Why buy an OEM vacuum pump for Mercedes-Benz vs. aftermarket?

It'll be genuine Mercedes-Benz, exceptional quality and guaranteed to fit. Plus, unlike some aftermarket vacuum pumps, it won't void your factory warranty.
