Mercedes-Benz Axles FAQ
Your Mercedes-Benz car, SUV, or van relies on axles to transfer power from the transmission to the wheels, to support the vehicle's weight, and to control the wheels' movement. Most have two of these rods or shafts in place, though larger models may have even more.
What Types of Axles are There?
There are three main kinds: front, rear, and stub. A front axle is usually made from carbon-steel or nickel-steel, and it helps with steering and adjusting to any bumps or nudges from uneven road surfaces. Front axles come in two types themselves. First, there are dead front axles, which always remain in place. Live front axles, on the other hand, rotate with your wheels.
Rear axles, however, consist of two half shafts that connect to each other through a differential, forming a complete unit. Most rear axles are the live type, and most lighter vehicles such as yours feature the type known as semi-floating rear axles.
Finally, stub axles connect to the front axle and come in four sub-types: Elliot, reverse Elliot, Lamoine, and reverse Lamoine. Each of these connects via different parts to the front axle, and in different ways.
How Can I Tell if an Axle in My Mercedes-Benz is Going Bad?
Unfortunately, even the highest-quality axles can fail. While that's sure to affect ride quality, the bigger concern involves reliable handling. Your best bet's to replace a faulty one before it fails. That means keeping an eye out for signs of defects: your vehicle not moving when you put it into gear, for example, plus excessive vibrations during driving.
