All About Cylinder Heads for Mercedes-Benz
What a Cylinder Head Does
The cylinder head plays an important role when it comes to maintaining the performance of the engine in your Mercedes-Benz vehicle. One can be made of either aluminum or cast iron, and it sits on top of the engine block where it helps protect various parts of the engine in a few ways.
For one, as it draws air and fuel into the engine to feed combustion, it helps dispel exhaust gases. Secondly, it helps direct coolant throughout the engine, where it cuts many parts' operating temps so the engine can run as best it can, for as long as it can. Finally, it teams with a head gasket to help prevent coolant and oil from getting into the combustion chamber.
Types of Cylinder Heads
These days, there are several. A flathead cylinder head, for one, has no moving parts, and doesn't do much more than protect the cylinder blocks. Overhead-valve cylinder heads have valves that are placed below the camshafts, and depend on pushrods and valves to produce even airflow. Lastly, overhead-camshaft cylinder heads have the camshaft located within, making them far more efficient.
Signs of Issues with a Mercedes-Benz Cylinder Head
Unfortunately, even the best cylinder heads can begin to go bad. Symptoms of trouble with one include:
- A misfiring engine
- Worsening engine performance
- Leaking coolant
- Milky-looking oil
- Cracks and other damage
- Excessive exhaust smoke
Notice any, and you'll need to inspect the head and, if results demand, replace it. (The job's tricky, often one for a certified mechanic; if you need help with it, schedule a service appointment at a Mercedes-Benz dealer.)
The Average Cost of Cylinder Head Replacement
You might be looking at between $3,680 and $4,040, by recent RepairPal estimates. That's for economy cars and SUVs, though. For a luxury model like a Mercedes-Benz, it might run a little pricier; Mercedes-Benz E 350 cylinder head replacement, for example, might have you paying $4,125 to $4,400 on average.
