What are the parts of a Mercedes-Benz trunk?

There are many, ranging from the decklid -- the trunk panel itself; the door to it -- to trunk divider boards that go between the rear seat and the cargo hold, trunk insulation for sound-deadening, and trunk lights for locating valuables in the dark. In older Mercedes-Benz models, there's also a kind of strut used to prop open the cover, called a lift support, whereas on newer vehicles, there are spring-loaded latches with shocks to hold up the trunk lid. Other parts include a lock assembly, a lock cylinder, retainers for the cylinder, and even a spare tire, with a spare tire cover for protection in storage.

Depending on the car or SUV you drive, you may also have interior accessories: a cargo liner or mat to protect your floors from dirt, muck, and impacts, for example, or a cargo cover to help conceal your valuables, or even weather stripping to safeguard the trunk against the elements.

Why won't the trunk of my Mercedes-Benz open?

Usually, either the prop rod has worn out, a spring needs to be reset, or the trunk latch has failed. To fix it, check to see if the trunk release is working; you can find it either on the driver's side door panel, near the steering wheel, or on the center console. Press and hold it for 20 seconds or so (and check your owner's manual for specifics on this); this should reset the trunk.

If that doesn't work, try manually turning the key in the trunk lock cylinder until it clicks; the trunk should then pop open. If this doesn't work, you may have triggered your car's Valet Mode, which prevents getting into the trunk; to disable it, find the Valet Mode switch, most likely in your glove box, and press it. If all else fails, a Mercedes-Benz service center can help figure out what's going on. Whatever the repairs, be sure to use OEM parts for them.

Why buy OEM trunk parts for Mercedes-Benz vs. aftermarket?

They'll be genuine Mercedes-Benz. That means of exceptional quality, the kind you're used to from your favorite luxury automaker. It also means a fit and finish that are guaranteed -- no compatibility guesswork to worry about. Plus, they won't void your factory warranty, unlike some aftermarket trunk parts can.
