All About Mercedes-Benz ABS Systems

The anti-lock brake system, or ABS, in your Mercedes-Benz vehicle is designed to prevent your wheels from locking up when you're braking. Based on the same principles involved in threshold braking and cadence braking, this automatic braking system maintains your connection with the road surface, increases braking distance, and improves your command while you're braking.

How an Anti-Lock Brake System Works

In order for the ABS to do its job, speed sensors need to be able to alert the system that a wheel is about to lock up. Once the sensor notes that deceleration, a controller reduces pressure to the affected brake until it notes that the wheel is accelerating again. That keeps the tires slowing at the same rate as your vehicle and each other, delivering maximum braking power.

Signs an ABS is Failing

Even the best anti-lock brakes can go bad eventually. Symptoms of trouble include:

  • Your dashboard light coming on
  • The brake pedal locking up
  • Your brakes stopping responding
  • Having to step on the brake pedal harder
  • Your speedometer stopping working

If you're not sure what the problem is exactly, you're welcome to take your car or SUV into a Mercedes-Benz service center to have a certified mechanic look at it.
