Mercedes-Benz Brakes FAQ

The brakes in your Mercedes-Benz slow the vehicle down, eventually bringing it to a complete stop. How they work, though, is more complicated. Here's everything you need to know -- what kinds of brakes there are, how they work, how long they last, signs they're going bad, and why you should buy OEM replacements.

What Types of Brakes are There and How Does Each Work?

There are two -- drum and disc. When the brake pedal is pressed, brake pistons travel the length of a master brake cylinder's bore. As they move, they pressurize brake fluid. The fluid then passes through a network of brake hoses and lines.

What happens next depends on the kind of brake system. In a drum brake, brake shoes fasten to brake drums. In a disc brake, brake rotors (the discs themselves) clamp to brake calipers, which have brake pads installed on them.

How Long Do the Brakes in a Mercedes-Benz Typically Last?

That depends on the condition of the parts. Either way, if you use a brake long enough, no matter which type it is, sooner or later, it'll end up worn out. Luckily, figuring out whether your brakes need changing is easy. All you have to do is look for a few telltale symptoms.

What are the Signs Brakes Need Replacement?

Look for warning lights on the dash. Feel for your car or SUV shuddering, pulling sideways, and/or taking longer to slow and stop when you brake. Also check your brake pedal to see whether it's unusually low or soft, and whether, in pressing it, there's less brake grip than usual. Listen for odd noises during braking, especially grinding, which often indicates completely worn brake pads.

How Do You Tell What Brake Parts Need Changing?

Do a brake inspection consisting of checking the brake pedal, fluid, lines, hoses, and assemblies, plus the parking brake and its cable. If it turns out a brake repair is necessary, you can buy OEM parts for the project straight from Mercedes-Benz, right here. They'll be top-quality, fit will be guaranteed, and they'll come backed by warranty.
