Mercedes-Benz AC Compressor And Clutch
All About Mercedes-Benz AC Compressors and Clutches
When you turn the air conditioning on in your Mercedes-Benz car or SUV, nothing happens until the AC compressor clutch activates. What it does is simple. It transfers the power from the engine crankshaft to a pulley that's mounted to the air conditioning compressor. When the AC isn't turned on, the compressor spins freely -- reducing the demand for power and improving your fuel economy.
A clutch is made of two separate parts: an electromagnetic coil and a friction disc. The coil creates magnetic forces that then push the friction into the clutch's assembly, causing the compressor to rotate with the shaft.
Signs an AC Compressor Clutch is Going Bad
Even the highest quality compressor clutch can fail over time. You'll know you've got trouble if you see the following symptoms:
- Your air conditioning stops working
- There's a strange smell coming from the air conditioner vents
- Warm air blows out of the vent, even though you've set the temperature to cold
- You hear loud noises when the AC is running
- The air conditioning only works sporadically
Compressors can be replaced individually or as part of the assembly. Changing them independently is usually easier for the average DIYer, since you don't need to purge and refill refrigerants (a job for a Mercedes-Benz service center) as part of the process.
