All About Mercedes-Benz Suspension & Steering Systems

If the suspension or steering system in your Mercedes-Benz vehicle stops working right, ride quality will get a lot less pleasant. Worse yet, you and your passengers will end up in harm's way.

After all, suspensions are made up of chasses, coil springs, upper and lower control arms, shock absorbers and strut assemblies (shocks and struts), ball joints, control rods, knuckle arms, and stabilizer/sway bars, while steering systems contain steering wheels, shafts, and columns, tie rods, steering racks, idler arms, Pitman arms, drag or center links, and in most cases these days, a power steering pump, a yoke/dampers, couplers, and hoses. Put simply, because these parts work together to support vehicles' weight, reduce body roll, and keep wheels aligned, stable, and spinning right, they keep turning, braking, and overall handling dependable. So, when one, the other, or both go out, it can mean losing control and ending up in an accident.

Signs of a Faulty Suspension or Steering System

Miss an inspection and service every 50,000 to 80,000 miles, and any suspension or steering system can start to go bad. That happens, and you'll notice worn parts, your vehicle will start pulling sideways during turns, the steering wheel will begin shaking or vibrating, the tire treads will start to look uneven, and a film of oil or grease may build up on the shocks and struts. In any case, inspect and replace parts as needed.
