All About Condensers & Evaporators for Mercedes-Benz

The AC system in your Mercedes-Benz vehicle has many parts to it, but two of the most important are its condenser and evaporator. Both help manage its heat, thereby helping to keep, for example, the < a href="/complete-engines">engine and other parts running at the right temperatures.

However, while they're both basically heat exchangers, they handle that heat in different ways. The evaporator is a smaller one, found inside the vehicle's ventilation system. It absorbs heat and humidity from the air before routing the cooler air through a blower fan and into the cabin. The condenser, on the other hand, is a bigger one, located near the radiator. As it vaporizes refrigerant, heat from the cabin gets absorbed; what it does, specifically, is turn the vapor into a liquid, then releasing said heat into the atmosphere.

Symptoms of Condenser and Evaporator Problems

The condenser's location makes it prone to damage from roadside debris, while corrosion can cause issues for both condensers and evaporators. Signs of trouble with both include:

  • Warmer cabin temperatures than usual
  • Weak airflow
  • A sweet smell on the interior (namely, of coolant)
  • Visible signs of coolant leaks

See any, and you'll need to replace whichever is the issue, especially if an inspection's results say to do so. (If you're not sure what to do or how to do it, get in touch with a Mercedes-Benz dealer to schedule a service appointment with a certified mechanic.)

The Average Cost of Condenser & Evaporator Replacement

That depends on the part, and on your Mercedes-Benz model. You might be looking at $1,080 plus for Mercedes-Benz C 300 condenser replacement, for instance, according to RepairPal -- for Mercedes-Benz E 300 evaporator replacement, $1,940 or more, and so on.
