All About Mercedes-Benz Grills

Spell it "grille." Shorten it to "grill." Either way, Mercedes-Benz, AMG® or otherwise, there's hardly a model sporting the Three-Pointed Star logo out there these days without one.

It does more than just cover openings on the body of your car or SUV, too (and that can have many -- many grills and many openings). Plus, what each particular kind does varies. You can learn all about them, and what they can do for your favorite luxury vehicle, right here.

Types of Grills

Take front grills, for instance (and front bumper grills, also called lower grills, for that matter). They allow air to flow and circulate freely, in and around your engine compartment and under the front of your vehicle, respectively. What they do is help protect and cool off both your radiator and the engine.

Another kind of grille, you can find on your hood. It's often called a cowl screen. What that does is cover the gap between your windshield and hood. It can also help ventilate the cabin.

A wheel grill, on the other hand, is another type you can find below your front bumper. It helps cool your brakes off as they produce friction and heat (between your brake rotors and brake pads).

A rear decklid grill, in contrast, is more specific. What it does is help safeguard and ventilate the engine in a Mercedes-Benz vehicle with rear-wheel drive (RWD).

What Grills are Made of

That varies widely, from basic but durable acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (commonly called ABS plastic) to ruggeder materials such as stainless steel and aluminum.

The Styles of Grill Available

Options abound. You can buy everything from stock grills to custom jobs anymore, from those with the star logo to those with the AMG® emblem. That means anything from grills with a floating-dot design to those with vertical slats, too. Finishes range from regular black to nearly any hue you can imagine, and some grilles even light up, whether just behind the emblem or otherwise.

Planning a replacement, or an upgrade? You're in luck: changing the grill on a Mercedes-Benz yourself is easy (although, if you need help with the job, there's always a Mercedes-Benz dealer). Just be sure to use an OEM replacement; it'll be luxury-quality, it'll fit right and look the part, and above all, it'll be covered by warranty in most cases; you can buy with confidence.
