Mercedes-Benz Brake Calipers FAQ
The brake calipers are among the most important parts in the disc brake system in your Mercedes-Benz vehicle. In simple terms, the calipers clamp onto your brake rotors. That creates friction -- or resistance -- that slows the rotation of your wheels. How brake calipers do that is more complex, though.
How Do the Brake Calipers in a Mercedes-Benz Work?
When you step on the brake pedal, the master brake cylinder responds by sending hydraulic brake fluid to pistons in the calipers. The building pressure forces the calipers to close brake pads onto the rotors. The pads protect against damage from metal-on-metal contact, and also help to disperse some of the heat generated by the act of braking.
What are the Signs of Failing Brake Calipers?
Even the best calipers can go bad, especially if the heat isn't properly dissipated. That can lead to seals decaying, which allows contaminants to collect in the calipers. Symptoms of trouble include:
- Grinding or squealing noises when you brake
- Your vehicle pulling to one side when you brake
- The brakes feeling spongy
- Feeling like you have to "pump" the brakes to get them to work right
- Dashboard brake warning lights coming on
In any case, inspect and, if needed, replace the calipers. Not sure what the actual problem is, or what to do about it? You're welcome to contact a Mercedes-Benz dealer to schedule a service appointment.
