Mercedes-Benz Master Cylinder And Parts

No matter which type of braking system is at work in your Mercedes-Benz vehicle, it depends on the master brake cylinder. What it does is simple.

How a Mercedes-Benz Master Brake Cylinder Works

First, you depress the brake pedal. That pedal pushes a piston through the master brake cylinder, which in turn forces brake fluid through brake lines and hoses to cylinders -- called slave cylinders, unfortunately -- at each wheel. Those cylinders drive pistons to force the friction material against the wheel hubs, which causes the wheels to stop rotating.

That friction material differs by braking system, though.

Disc Brakes

In this set-up, the brake calipers press brake pads against the brake rotors.

Drum Brakes

This type fastens the brake shoes to the brake drums to create the resistance needed to slow the wheels.

How to Spot A Faulty Master Cylinder

While your master cylinder is designed to last your car's full lifespan, it can go bad. If you don't keep the brake fluid reservoir filled, that's a sure way to experience issues. There are other ways it can fail, though, from fluid leaks to decayed seals and more. Signs of master brake cylinder trouble include:

  • Mushy-feeling brake pedal: If your brake pedal feels unusually soft underfoot, that's a sign that your master brake cylinder is having difficulty producing the hydraulic pressure needed for braking. The pedal sinking completely to the floor is a worst-case scenario.
  • Dirty-looking brake fluid: If your brake fluid looks exceptionally dark or dirty, the rubber seals on the master cylinder may have failed. That allows corrosion to set in, affecting the master cylinder, lines, and other components.
  • The "Check Engine" light comes on: While this is a generic warning that requires connecting a code reader to properly diagnose, it may come as a surprise that a faulty master cylinder can trigger this alert. That's because newer models come with sensors in the master cylinder. If they detect a problem, they can cause both the brake warning light and your engine lights to engage.
