Your Mercedes-Benz car, SUV, or van came from the factory with a parking brake in place. Whether you refer to it by that name or prefer to use the words emergency brake or hand brake, it works in the same way. You either pull a lever located between the two front seats or press your foot against a small pedal on your cabin floor. That action causes a set of pads or shoes to engage the rear brakes, which locks them into place to keep your vehicle immobilized -- even if you park on hills.

What Parking Brake Cables Do

They work in one of two ways, depending on the type of brake system.

Drum brakes: The cable connects to the brake shoes, pulling them against the brake drum when you apply the parking brake.

Disc brakes: this type of system uses the cable in one of two ways. Some connect it to a mini drum located inside the brake rotors. When the parking brake activates, the lever pulls the brake shoes into the drum. Models equipped with four-wheel drive are more likely to attach the cables to the caliper piston located on each rear wheel. The piston responds to the emergency brake's application by closing the pads onto the rotor.

How to Spot Faulty Parking Brake Cables

Unfortunately, it's not unusual for a parking brake cable to go bad. Since you may not use your emergency brake regularly, the cable can either rust or get stuck in place. If you feel a loose response when pulling the handle, it's likely that the cable has become overworn -- so it won't pull the brake back as tightly as it should. In worst case scenarios, the cable can snap and become completely unresponsive.
