1980s

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SD was introduced in 1980 as a member of the W126 S-Class family. Built on the standard wheelbase, the rear-wheel drive sedan featured a 3.0-liter turbodiesel inline-five engine that mated to either manual or automatic transmissions. Production of the W126 ended in 1985, but the model continued on as a W140 variant when reintroduced in 1992.

That model featured a 3.5-liter turbodiesel inline-six engine that was married to a five-speed automatic transmission. Eventually, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SD was renamed the Mercedes-Benz S350 Turbodiesel in 1993, before being replaced in the lineup by the Mercedes-Benz S 300 Turbodiesel.

Features were numerous, and included anti-lock brakes, a self-leveling suspension, power heated seats, and traction control.
